Stupid, stupid, stupid...
Oh, for PETE'S SAKE! This article from the New York Times (free registration required, or go to Bug Me Not and get a password there) made me crazy. Why does The N feel the need to censor Degrassi to the point where episodes are out of order, scenes are deleted or toyed with, or episodes are just SKIPPED because they might be "too much" for American audiences. My GOD, the Puratinism!!
"We felt that you could get the point that he was being badly physically abused by his father without the extended scene that Epitome had shot of that abuse," said someone from The N's programming department.
Do these people really think Americans have their heads up their asses so far that they don't know of a teenage girl who is pregnant? Or that people have abortions? That kids are abused by their parents? It's just so INSULTING to teenagers. Just so insulting. Things that are happening in their lives, that are important to them, are offensive? God. Just...God.

Amy,
It's denial. If they don't acknowledge that it's "actually" happening...well, maybe it's really "not." The ones who really suffer are the teenagers. They lose out on the opportunity to see how others handle the situations that are so close to their lives--whether it's their OWN life or someone's close to them. Imagine television actually offering positive options to teenagers in regards to the problems they face. Imagine.
I couldn't agree more. I loved Degrassi Jr high and high as a teen and I was so excited when I found Degrassi TNG on the N...until I found out about the skipped eps, not shown eps and edited eps. Whats teh point? They show so much worse in music videos that kids see. Oh well, hopefully they'll keep putting everything out on DVD.
They censor Degrassi Jr High?!?!? You're shitting me, right??? OMG, that little 80's Canadian show is worthy of censoring, when the O.C. runs weekly; routinly portraying anorexic, bi-curious, suicidal, drunk, dysfunctional chicks?? What's a little abuse and teen pregnancy compared to that? Unreal. Word the wise, in the last episode you see Joey's naked ass.... Well, at least you're supposed to...
I guess they are censoring because The N is technically a children's network?? I too am chagrined and disheartened by all of the censoring. It's really a gem of a show. My husband even watches it. Does anyone know if any of the seasons are out on DVD yet? I really wanted to see the Manny/pregnancy eps, and The N clearly does not intend to run them.
